Strategic Online Marketing – Lay off the Hard Sell!
What is the difference between selling off-line and online? Specifically, how should a marketer approach the task of reaching his or her target audience, aiming for that precious conversion?
Online, more than anywhere else, people hate the hard sell. Many theories have been put forward to try and explain why it should be viewed as particularly repulsive within this arena as compared to elsewhere, but we may also find the answer in recent studies by Nielsen, who predict a pending revolution against “in-your-face” banner ads on your mobile device. However, there’s plenty of room for strategic internet marketing for small business.
It may well be that your desktop, laptop or mobile represent more of a “personal” environment and you do not think that you should have to endure a hard sell here. Your snail mail box or your television screen may not represent your personal space in this way, or we may be more used to heavy selling within these different environments.
If you really want to reach potential clients on the Internet, you should try strategic online marketing and adopt a low-key approach. Seek to provide value, information and position yourself and your company accordingly. Potential clients should be aware of your existence and the fact that you often give free advice, willingly and in general help them with their issues and problems.
Leading strategic online marketing expert Joe Vitale reckons that he only sells to his prospects approximately 5% of the time and he draws back with horror whenever he receives heavy and hard hitting e-mails from would-be mass marketers.
The softly but surely approach is likely to reap dividends for you if you align it with a clear strategy. The web is of course primarily an information vehicle and there is plenty of room for opinions, blog posts, commenting, tweeting and all the rest of it.
Do you agree? Have you had enough of those hard sell emails from those who are not strategic online marketing experts?
