Today Social Media, Tomorrow the World — Facebook Aspires
Some people would think that Facebook is barely out of diapers, but it is making moves to enter into the big time and launch a potential challenge to some of the more established players and other upstarts.
In the last day or so Facebook purchased the social network Friendfeed and may be angling to challenge its rival Twitter. Some people say they are going to launch “Facebook Lite” as just such a direct competitor.
Other rumors suggest that they are in the process of revamping their search engine capabilities and may be poised to seriously enter the market. Facebook already garners a considerable amount of site traffic and is coming close to rival some of the major search engines in this respect already. Some privacy watchdogs may worry about the security of the massive amount of its users personal information held by Facebook.
Facebook is evidently serious and paid some $50 million for Friendfeed. Further rumors suggest that they are looking to establish an online payment processing platform to challenge PayPal, which has a significant head start in this field.
As Google launches its “Caffeine” engine and Microsoft and Yahoo get behind their “Bing” engine, there’s a lot happening in the Internet world these days.
Could Facebook launch any kind of meaningful challenge to Google?
