Social Media – Tweet Me Some Cash

Welcome Back!!

Yes, Social Media is still a buzzword but so what, we like bees. Can you believe that Twitter is only a couple of years old, yet is also close to being a household name. I mean, come on, it took Google quite a long time before their brand name jumped into the dictionary to describe a method of searching for information online – “why don’t you google it?” It seemed for the longest time that Yahoo was the big brother search engine but somewhere along the line Google exploded and Silicon Valley got its street cred back. The Google revolution is old hat; move over and let these social media types in.

Before long, if you don’t “tweet” you just won’t be cool. Or, do you think that something else will come along and replace this fad? Twitter does seem to have quite a strong hold, almost a niche in the niche-saturated Internet sphere. While Facebook may well be too much for MySpace, who will take on the might of the blue canary?

There are many marketing folks out there, in the real world, scratching their heads and looking at the likes of Facebook and Twitter longingly. Surely, there must be a way to harness this traffic and sell our stuff? If these social media sites truly are the new era of marketing, as those people who foresaw the Web 2.0 revolution predicted, then Madison Avenue must be able to have its fair share.

If you are a purist and just want to have some fun without being pitched, you will hope that the current resistance posed by Facebook users gathers steam and that Facebook corporate does not create a meaningful marketing platform, as many suggest is rather inevitable. Recently, MSNBC.com wondered aloud whether Facebook would even be around in five years, simply because they did not have a money making model or, as they say, a way of “monetizing” the site. Twitter is the same way, explosive growth in terms of member tweeters but no business model?

The most savvy marketers understand that it is possible to harness the power of these social media platforms, but it must be done in a very subtle, or you could even say extremely subtle way :-)
